A study of 3,533 participants with type 2 diabetes found that semaglutide use was associated with a 24% reduction in a composite of major kidney events and cardiovascular death, compared with the control group.

Results like these reinforce the role of GLP-1 receptor agonists beyond glycemic control, positioning them also as a relevant tool for kidney and cardiovascular protection in people with type 2 diabetes.

The authors note that more long-term data are needed, but consider these results a solid argument for expanding the use of this drug family in patients at high cardiorenal risk.
