An international study involving the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (IRB-CatSud) and CIBEROBN has identified molecular patterns in blood capable of anticipating mortality risk in people with metabolic disorders related to diabetes.

The research analyzed plasma samples from nearly 700 older adults at high metabolic risk. Using advanced analytical techniques, the team identified 31 metabolites linked to type 2 diabetes and another 105 associated with insulin resistance, building two distinct biological signatures from them.

By cross-referencing both signatures, the researchers found 9 shared metabolites closely tied to mortality risk: people in whom these biological signals were more pronounced showed a significantly higher risk of dying during the study's follow-up period.
