The February 2026 update to the NICE NG28 guideline on managing type 2 diabetes in adults reinforces a person-centered care model, including around nutrition.
The document recommends that nutritional counseling be individualized, ongoing over time and delivered by professionals with specific nutrition training, rather than generic recommendations that are the same for every patient.
On the type of diet itself, the guideline follows the general outline of a healthy diet: high-fiber, low-glycemic-index carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, plus low-fat dairy, oily fish, and controlling saturated and trans fats.
