Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approved five new injectable medicines based on synthetic semaglutide for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity: Owozy, Seemasun, Zempneo, Semavy and Orsema.
All five share semaglutide as their active ingredient, the same molecule found in the well-known Ozempic (Novo Nordisk). Their arrival comes after the original drug's patent expired in Brazil, opening the door to alternatives from different manufacturers in the country.
Approvals like this one typically translate into more competition and, over time, into potentially wider and cheaper access to GLP-1 receptor agonists, a drug family increasingly used both for type 2 diabetes control and for weight management.
