The American Diabetes Association's (ADA) 2026 update to its Standards of Care in Diabetes reinforces structured follow-up for people with prediabetes, aiming to slow its progression toward established type 2 diabetes.
Among the tools gaining weight in this update are weight-loss programs targeting 5% to 7% of body weight, the Mediterranean diet as a reference pattern, telemedicine support to ease follow-up, and selective use of metformin in people at higher risk.
The document also reinforces diabetes self-management education, individualized nutrition care, exercise, sleep and quitting smoking or vaping, in addition to recommending systematic screening for diabetes-related distress.
